Darren Lockyer portrait works wonders for sick kids and fans

A portrait of Darren Lockyer painted by well-known realism artist Nikyla Smith has made a new home at the Broncos Leagues Club.

The life-like painting of Darren was originally purchased by Ken Cougan, from the Brisbane bayside suburb of Scarborough.

"It was a thrill to get my hands on this amazing artwork of Darren Lockyer," Ken said.

"However the portrait deserves a home where Broncos fans can not only appreciate its artistic value but be inspired by Locky's amazing contribution to the game and the club."

A group of local businessmen who are passionate Broncos supporters championed the call to action by donating almost $20,000 to work even more wonders for sick kids bringing the total raised to almost $40,000.

Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation, Ms Karenlee Spillane, said: "We're thrilled that the portrait has generated so much enthusiasm, and so grateful to Nikyla and Locky for donating their time and talent.

"Not only will fans welcome the opportunity to admire the portrait for years to come but the generous gifts from Ken and the business community will help work wonders for sick kids throughout Queensland and beyond."

Artist Nikyla Smith completed a portrait of Broncos prop Shane Webcke in 2006 which was auctioned for $10,000 - all of which was donated to the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation for ground-breaking paediatric research.

"I'm delighted that Locky's portrait continues to attract so much interest. It's immensely rewarding to know that my passion for painting will be appreciated by equally passionate football fans and help improve the lives of sick kids at the Royal Children's Hospital," Nikyla said.
